A Changing of the Guard

January 15, 2009

As I write this, President Bush has only a few days in office.  I know that this brings great joy to some (especially those in the media).  While I have not agreed with all the things the President has done, he has managed to do some good things in eight very challenging years.  It’s important for us to remember what our country was like after the attacks of September 11.  President Bush exhibited a resolve to protect us and to keep our country safe, and he has done that.    He has demonstrated a willingness to make unpopular decisions based upon his convictions.  While some of those decisions are worth questioning, one cannot question the courage it takes to make them.  Anyone can make popular decisions.  Character is often revealed in sticking to one’s convictions.

While many will say that the President has failed in the realm of foreign affairs, the last eight years have really demonstrated the depths of American compassion.  This administration has done more than most in regard to AIDS in Africa and the battle against malaria.  Furthermore, President Bush has tried to bring democracy to the Middle East.  History will have to determine whether the idea to plant the seeds of democracy in Iraq was successful.  It’s worth noting that Harry Truman’s contemporaries thought little of him.  As time has passed, historians have looked back more favorably.

As President Bush prepares to leave office, President-Elect Obama is preparing to assume it.  While I disagree with many (or maybe most) of President-Elect Obama’s ideas, it is important for us to pray for him.  The presidency is a tough job in the best of circumstances.  Our nation faces some tough challenges.  The incoming president will need wisdom and discernment.  The Bible tells us “to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2, NLT).  When  Senator Obama becomes President Obama, he will need the hand of God upon him.  We should pray for him and his family.  As we experience this transition in the White House, we should express our thanks for the good the outgoing president has done, and ask God’s guidance and blessing on the one coming in.
